Telehealth usage in the United States has largely stabilized after years of rapid expansion, according to new healthcare utilization data released in December. Providers are increasingly focusing on refining virtual care models rather than expanding them indiscriminately.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth adoption surged as in-person visits declined. In 2025, usage levels have settled into a steady pattern, with virtual visits accounting for a consistent share of outpatient care.

Healthcare systems report that telehealth remains particularly effective for behavioral health, follow-up appointments, and chronic condition management. However, many providers have scaled back its use for initial diagnoses and complex cases that require physical examinations.

Reimbursement policy continues to shape adoption. Temporary federal flexibilities extended through 2025 have allowed providers to receive comparable payment for virtual and in-person visits, though uncertainty remains about long-term coverage rules.

Patients have expressed mixed preferences. Surveys indicate strong satisfaction among those using telehealth for convenience-based care, while others prefer in-person visits for continuity and trust.

Hospital administrators say the focus in 2026 will be on integrating telehealth into hybrid care pathways rather than treating it as a standalone service. Investments are increasingly directed toward interoperability, data security, and clinician training.

While telehealth may no longer be expanding at pandemic-era rates, healthcare leaders view its current stability as a sign of long-term viability within the U.S. healthcare system.
