MANITOU SPRINGS - 1,800 runners put their legs, lungs and mind to the ultimate challenge in the 52nd running of the Pikes Peak Ascent.

The internationally known race is covers 13.32 miles and takes runners through an 8,000 ft. altitude change ending at the summit of Pikes Peak.  Participants are drawn to the race from every state and many other countries making for a wide range of runners.

"You know, you look at the mountain every day and it's there, so you gotta do it," said Sander Rigney, an Ascent regular who decided to race in a hot dog costume for laughs.

43-year-old Mike Carpenter took home his 13th Ascent win, and newcomer Maria Portilla from Peru came in first for the women.
