ARAPAHOE CO. - Two troopers are recovering from a "serious injury crash" which happened Sunday evening near Parker Rd & Highway 225.
Just after 5pm, the two troopers were along the left shoulder of the roadway investigating an accident. That's when a Ford Explorer lost control on the icy roadway nearby, according to the official report.
The Explorer hit the troopers' Crown Vic patrol car. It was pushed into the center concrete median, into both of the troopers. The Explorer then hit the original car the troopers were on the scene for.
The troopers were taken to Aurora South Hospital, with moderate, and serious non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the Ford Explorer has been identified as Edilberto Garcia-Castro. The 30-year-old had a woman and a child in the vehicle with him. None of them were hurt, and all of them were wearing their seatbelts.
Garcia-Castro is charged with: Careless Driving causing Injury, Exceeded Safe Speed for Conditions, and Driving without a Valid Driver's License. Alcohol or drugs are not suspected as contributing factors.
The leading contributing factor in this crash was the driver traveling too fast for the road conditions. The road conditions at the time were described as wet and icy.
The Colorado State Patrol would like to remind motorists to slow down and use caution as they drive through inclement conditions and when approaching an accident scene.
CSP says, "With three troopers being hit and injured this weekend this is a reminder of the dangers that of our officers, firefighters, EMT's and highway workers encounter on a daily basis."
