MONUMENT - Many drivers seem to be heeding the advice to stay home during Sunday's winter storm. Traffic was light in the Monument area as of 9 a.m., with few accidents reported.
While some streets and roads were slushy, others were snow-packed or icy. Monica Dik of Elizabeth said it took her more than 90 minutes to drive from her home in Elizabeth to her job at a restaurant in El Paso County--that's three times longer than usual. She described I-25 around the Baptist Road exit as "terrible." Driving on I-25 between the Springs and Monument felt more like dirt or gravel roads because of packed ice and snow.
El Paso County had 28 crews out plowing and applying sand and salt. Teller County had 16 crews in service. Both departments began working at 4 a.m., and reported no serious problems or specific areas of concern. Smaller plows were busy clearing snow and ice from parking lots. The job became even colder for Ryan Gleeson, when his heater stopped working.
Many neighborhoods in Monument dug out with shovels and snowblowers. However, residents were glad the snow wasn't as deep as expected.
