COLORADO SPRINGS - A woman who personally thanked veterans and gave them candy was the highlight of the annual Veterans' Day parade held downtown Saturday morning.
"We pray for them and love them," said the woman identified only as Barbara. "They are winning freedom for the world."
Barbara approached each float or group of active duty or retired soldiers moving down Tejon Street, tossing pieces of candy and expressing gratitude. "These things are important to bring before us, so that we'll remember what real priorities are in this nation. If men and women are going to give their lives, what can we do? We can stand, support them, send money to the wounded, give them a piece of candy and tell them that we love them."
Veterans: The Unwavering Force was the parade's theme this year. There was an emphasis on music, with nearly 20 bands performing. Many people remarked that the crowd was larger than the Red, White & Brave parade honoring returning troops in August.
The parade's grand marshal was Henry "Duke" Boswell, a World War II veteran who fought during D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge.
