CRAIG, Colo. (AP) - Voters in a Moffat County town are sticking with spending limits for candidates, despite legal concerns the limits could run afoul of free speech protections.

Craig voters decided 55 percent to 45 percent to limit candidates for city office from spending more than $500 of their own money. The spending limit appears to conflict with federal free-speech law, and the city earlier this year decided not to enforce the rule against a city council candidate who spent $1,500.

Craig voters were asked Tuesday whether to keep the limit in the city charter or delete it. Voters decided to keep the rule on the books, though it wouldn't be enforced unless the nation's high court changes its guidelines on campaign spending limits.
