PUEBLO COUNTY - A team of experts is still working to learn more about the human remains discovered in Pueblo County Saturday morning.
The body was found in a shallow grave in the far western part of the county near Wetmore, off of Highway 96.
On Sunday investigators, detectives and anthropologists searched the shallow gravesite for more clues. Officials say a dove hunter made the grim discovery after he noticed several coyotes digging around the same area.
Pueblo County Coroner, James Kramer says the bones may have only been at the site for a matter of months, but how they got there remains a mystery.
"It appears they have been at this location, probably since early 2009," said Kramer. "But that is a tentative timeline."
The sex of the body is still awaiting confirmation, but Kramer tells NEWSCHANNEL 13 that it appears to belong to an adult male. Kramer says they still have a lot of questions to answer about what happened.
"It's way to early to come to the determination as to what caused this individual to come to their death and that's the next step in the process," he explained.
While investigators worked to clear the gravesite Sunday, teams from the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office searched the area surrounding the bones by foot along the stretch of Highway.
Kramer says nothing has been confirmed, but as of now the discovery and the way the body way buried is extremely suspicious.
"It's certainly suspicious as far as the location and circumstances," he said. "I would not anticipate that this would be a natural death process."
Deputy Laurie Kilpatrick with the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office tells NEWSCHANNEL 13 that once they learn more information about the human remains, they will be cross-checking all of the information with their missing person's database.
