OTERO COUNTY - A driver involved in a rollover crash ran from the scene leaving one of his passengers pinned under the car early Monday morning.
The Colorado State Patrol found 34-year-old Jesse Tapia of Rocky Ford pinned under a 1996 Ford Mustang that had flipped on Colorado 266, 2 miles northeast of Rocky Ford around 2:00 a.m. Police say the Mustang failed to negotiate a curve to the left and traveled off the right side of the highway, ejecting the driver and two other passengers in the rollover. None of the occupants were wearing their seat belts and alcohol is suspected to have played a role in the crash.
Tapia was airlifted to Penrose Main in Colorado Springs with serious injuries. Shortly after 6:00 a.m. , the second passenger, 19-year-old Steven Vigil of Rocky Ford, managed to make a telephone call to family members after being taken away from the scene by the fleeing driver, according to police. Vigil was able to direct Troopers and emergency rescue personnel to both his and the driver's location in a remote field, approximately one-half mile from the crash scene. Vigil was also airlifted to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs with serious injuries.
The driver was identified as 19-year-old Isaiah Trujillo of Rocky Ford. Trujillo was treated at Ark Valley Regional Medical Center in La Junta for minor injuries. He was released to the custody of the Colorado State Patrol and is being held in the Otero County Jail pending charges.
