CROWLEY COUNTY - A sixteen-year-old girl from Olney Springs has died and three others, including a three-year-old boy are seriously injured after a car wreck Sunday evening.
The wreck happened just after 6:00pm Sunday. State Troopers say sixteen-year-old; Donna San Juan was driving east on Highway 96 just outside of Boone near Mile Marker 76 when her car swerved off of the road and into an irrigation ditch.
Neighbors who live near the bridge tell NEWSCHANNEL 13 that they ran out of their home and saw the van submerged in water and two people standing on the hood yelling for help.
Monday morning an assembly was called at Crowley County High School to deliver the bad news to San Juan's classmates.
"I was just really shocked," said Lesley Slocum, a senior at the High School. "There's not much class going on today, but more of like support and stuff like that."
There are only about 150 students that attend Crowley County High School in Ordway. In a statement released by the schools principal, Lisa Bauer said the student body is extremely close knit. The loss of one of their classmates has come as a shock.
"She was outgoing," said Slocum about San Juan. "She was just really fun to be around."
Students say Donna was looking forward to trying out for the cheerleading team in the fall.
"I'm the cheerleading captain and I got to help her, she wanted me to help her with a few things," she said.
About 30 miles west of Ordway along Highway 96, the site of the deadly car accident helps to tell the story of what happened. You can see marks where the van she was driving suddenly swerved off the road, hit a road sign as well as the guardrail before it fell into a nearby irrigation ditch.
There are still two pairs of shoes and several pieces of clothing scattered along the way where rescue workers worked to save the lives of the victims.
Also in the car were San Juan's friend, mother and three-year-old nephew. All of them were treated at Pueblo hospitals, except for the three-year-old boy who has been flown to a Colorado Springs hospital and remains in serious condition.
